What is a Otoplasty (Ear pinning)?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure for making ears less prominent. Many patients, both children and adults, have ears that “stick out too far”. During the Otoplasty procedure, sutures are placed to permanently pin back the ears for a more natural looking ear.

What to expect:

The surgery lasts about 2 hours and you will have an incision hidden behind the ear. Sutures are used to permanently pull the ears in tighter against the head. Excess skin or cartilage can also be removed. The result is a natural-looking ear that no longer appears prominent.

Recovery:

You usually go home the same day. You will have a head wrap or dressing over the ears for a few days. You should not sleep of lie on your ears during the first week or two at least.  Most patients will need to keep the head wrapped for a few days after surgery, and protect the ears for several weeks. Keeping the head elevated will help with swelling. Visible swelling and bruising usually subside within one or two weeks but complete swelling may take longer to completely resolve. No exercise for about 1-2 weeks and no heavy lifting. Depending on your profession, you may return to work within 1 week.
