Questions you may have about a breast lift

What is a Breast Lift or Mastopexy?

Many women, especially those who nursed after pregnancy, develop ptosis (sagging) of the breasts. Aging causes the breasts to lose volume in the upper pole and the nipples to point downward. Mastopexy is an operation that lifts the entire breast so that the nipples are at the correct position in relation to the rest of the breast. The surgery also reestablishes a more youthful profile and projection to the breast.

The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, and most patients can return to work and a relatively normal lifestyle in about one week.

What to expect

Our surgeons use a variety of the latest techniques, depending on what you need. There area various incision options available to you based on the amount of surgical correction needed but we do everything possible to minimize scarring.

During surgery, the breasts and nipples will be lifted and reshaped for a firmer, more youthful appearance. The scars can be around the nipple, straight down from the nipple and possibly in the breast fold. For an increase in bra size or more fullness up top, an implant can also possibly be placed at the same time. For a decrease in size, we can remove some breast tissue at the same time.

Recovery

You usually go home the same day. You can expect to feel sore and tired at first but most people start to feel much better even after just a few days. Although your breasts will appear larger and higher immediately after surgery, some of this is due to postoperative swelling. We will provide you with a supportive bra that will worn for several weeks to aid in comfort, minimize swelling, and promote healing. The final results take 6 weeks to 3 months as your breasts settle. No heavy lifting more than 10 lbs for about 2 weeks, and no heavy upper arm exercises for 6-8 weeks. Scars will eventually fade over the next few months to a fine white scar. Many of our patients find that their breasts have returned to a more youthful appearance and are more comfortable wearing swimsuits or low cut tops. You should be back to normal by 4-6 weeks.
