What is a Liposuction?

Liposuction is a popular method of body sculpting that is safe and very effective in trained hands. During the procedure, a narrow cannula, or blunt tube, is inserted beneath the skin through very small incisions. Excess fat can be removed from the abdomen, hips, thighs and knees. Our surgeons use the tumescent technique in which a solution of anesthetic and saline is first injected beneath the skin into the fatty layer. This technique minimizes pain and blood loss, while at the same time producing a more desirable and natural result.

Most patients can return to their normal lifestyle after one week. All patients are instructed to wear a tight-fitting, specialized garment for three to six weeks to help minimize swelling and unevenness. Before surgery you and your surgeon will discuss exactly what areas of the body are to be treated.

What to expect:

A few very small incisions will be made in the area being treated. Excess fat is removed with liposuction. Incisions are then sutured and the skin will be taped and wrapped in a supportive compression garment to help minimize swelling and promote healing. The skin will naturally contract some overtime.

Recovery:

You usually go home the same day Swelling can last from 6 weeks to 3 months, but you will still notice an immediate difference. A compression garment can be worn for 4-6 weeks to help with swelling. No drains are needed. You cannot exercise for about 2 weeks and can expect to be out of work about 1 weeks depending on your profession. No heavy lifting more than 10 lbs for about 2 weeks. The small scars will eventually fade over the next few months to a fine white scar and some are hidden. Many of our patients find that they can fit into smaller more form-fitting clothing sizes. You should be back to normal by 4-6 weeks.
